An incident that occurred in Bexar County Jail in San Antonio, Texas, on September 29, 2017, has led to an investigation to determine why deputies tased and restrained a Bexar County Sheriff’s deputy, a corporal. The corporal was allegedly stunned with a Taser multiple times. The entire incident came to light this week when an anonymous source contacted journalists about it. Video was obtained that shows what happened after the corporal struggled to get free. The video shows that the officer on the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) continued holding the corporal down, though his legs were shackled and he was handcuffed. It also shows that the Taser prongs were still in the corporal for several minutes after the stun gun had been deployed.
An internal document about the incident also got into the hands of reporters, and it says that the corporal was ill and a SERT officer used a Taser on him three times.
The memo also goes into how the incident started out. A Sergeant found the corporal standing and leaning against a wall. The Sergeant reportedly told investigators that he ordered a SERT officer to pull his Taser after the corporal was behaving strangely and ignoring him.
In the document, it also says that the corporal had been feeling dizzy. He was spitting up blood and propped himself against the wall. He said he didn’t have adequate time to respond to the Sergeant. He said he had been through a similar episode before and that the first time, he was taken care of by fellow officers, not forced to the floor and hit with a stun gun three times.
The corporal was eventually taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
