On Sunday, November 26, 2017, security staff at Parks Mall in Arlington, Texas, reported that they were in pursuit of a suspect who had allegedly stolen two pairs of sunglasses from the Sunglass Hut. Two Arlington police officers at the mall went to the scene. The suspect was running towards an escalator going from a lower to an upper deck. There was an officer on each deck. According to authorities, the suspect pulled out a firearm and directed it toward the police officer on the lower deck. They described the firearm as appearing to be an imitation or replica. The police officer on the lower deck fired his weapon, allegedly striking the suspect. Authorities say the suspect is in his early 20’s, and he was rushed to a local hospital. According to one source, the suspect is in critical condition. There were no other injuries at the scene of the alleged police-involved shooting.

People were asked to avoid the area, and the mall was evacuated and closed. It opened during normal hours as of the following morning.

Police officers recovered the firearm the suspect was carrying, and they said that it fires pellets or “BBs.” Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson posted a message on Twitter that such a replica of a firearm should never be used in criminal endeavors, since police officers do not have adequate training that could help them distinguish between a real and an imitation gun within seconds. He said officers are pursuing legislation to address the dangers created by realistic-looking faux firearms.

Mall shoppers said it was a chaotic scene, when shots were fired. Reportedly, kids were trampled, people were panicked and crying, and many shoppers crammed into restrooms. In general, people didn’t know what to do.

Police officers in Rockwall, Texas were dispatched to the Bent Creek condominiums area on a call about an alleged aggravated assault on a family member on September 21, 2017. Officers say that they saw the suspect, who then began allegedly ramming into police vehicles using his SUV. One officer then fired non-lethal beanbags at the man. A second officer then allegedly shot the suspect with his service handgun. The man’s name has not yet been released. He was quickly transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the police, the man who was shot had an active felony warrant for family violence. Police officers had reason to believe the man was in the area because of the earlier report of aggravated assault.

The police officer who fired non-lethal rounds is still on duty. Per department policy, the officer involved in the alleged fatal police shooting is now on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation. The Texas Rangers will provide assistance to the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation into the fatal shooting.

Public trust of police officers and their use of force has come under a great deal of fire in recent years. Rallies, riots, and public outcries across the country are directed at police officers in regard to specific cases where fatal police shootings are perceived as being unjustified. The issue is complicated, since police officers undergo specific training to protect both the public and themselves in incidents involving possible criminal suspects believed to be a danger to law enforcement officers or others.

On Thursday, September 21, 2017, in Josephine, Texas, about 30 miles north of Dallas, police shot a man who was holding a firearm. The man had pulled his pickup truck in front of Josephine City Hall and got out holding a rifle. Officers say that they gave repeated commands for him to drop the weapon. When he did not comply, police allegedly fired multiple shots. Neighbors reported hearing up to ten gunshots. It’s unknown how many times the suspect was hit, and his identity has not yet been revealed. He was injured in the police shooting and said to be in serious condition. Afterwards, he was transported by medical helicopter to a hospital. No one else was harmed.

Josephine is in Collin County and has a population of about 1,300. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, police received a tip at about 4 p.m. that a person who had allegedly been in a disturbance of some kind at city hall a few days prior was on his way there again. Details of the initial disturbance were not provided. Law enforcement officers were already at city hall when the man arrived with a rifle.

The police shooting is being investigated by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers.

Police are under far more scrutiny than in previous times, with an increasing number of public outcries when shootings are believed to be racially motivated or instances in which excessive force was used.

Coroner’s Report on Ismael Lopez Confirms Alleged Police Shooting with a 9mm Pistol the Cause of Death

The death of Ismael Lopez in Southaven, Mississippi, on July 23, 2017, has attracted widespread attention. Jeffrey Pounders, the DeSoto County Coroner, said Lopez died of a gunshot wound to the head, and the weapon was a 9mm pistol. Lopez was allegedly shot in the head and died after Southaven Police Department officers went to the wrong address. Officers were looking for a man who lived just a few feet away from the Lopez residence. Tragically, the mistake of address on the part of police cost Lopez his life. The controversy surrounding the alleged fatal police shooting also centers around different versions provided by the police and family members.

According to his wife, Lopez was asleep until he heard the dog barking. He got up and the next thing she knew, shots were fired. The wife also said that when she went into the room and saw her husband lying on the floor, there wasn’t a gun near him. Although there were guns in the household, she said that her husband was not in possession of any of them at the time he was allegedly shot.

Police officers say that when they knocked on the door, it opened and a dog attacked them. The dog was shot and then they say they saw someone at the door holding a gun, and he refused to drop the weapon. Fires were allegedly shot through the front door, however, which doesn’t seem to track with what officers say happened.

The investigation into the police shooting incident continue, and there has been no mention of the use of body cameras, which could provide greater insight into what happened.

Body Cameras Were Not Activated Before the Alleged Fatal Police Shooting of a 9-1-1 Caller

Justine Ruszczyk called the police on Saturday night, July 15, 2017, out of concern that a crime may have been taking place. According to Don Damond, Ruszczyk’s fiancé, she called 9-1-1 because she thought an assault was taking place in an alley behind her home. Two officers went to the scene, and one of the officers fired shots, killing the 9-1-1 caller. Neither of the Minneapolis, Minnesota, officers turned on the body cameras before the alleged fatal police shooting occurred. This was the first such shooting that has taken place in the city since officers were equipped with body cameras last year.

There are about a dozen situations in which police officers in Minneapolis are required to turn on their body cameras. According to the Policy and Procedure Manual at the police department, those instances include suspicious person stops, traffic stops, and before the use of force. The manual says that if the cameras have not been turned on before force is used, officers are to activate them as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Jenny Singleton of the Police Conduct Oversight Commission said that much is still unknown about exactly what happened before shots were fired that night. Singleton expressed her opinion that it appears that the cameras should have been activated before gunfire occurred. She said that since a gun was discharged, it was unquestionably an incident involving use of force.

Ruszczyk’s death is currently being investigated by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The findings will be turned over to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office at some point.

Mike Freeman, Hennepin County Attorney, will ultimately make the decision regarding whether or not the two officers involved in the alleged police shooting will face criminal charges. There is no clear indication in the police policy manual of what type of discipline the officers could face.

Ruszczyk was due to get married to Damond next month. There is widespread outrage over this fatal police shooting.

On November 29, 2016, at about 3:10 p.m., Friendswood police officers responded to a call about a theft. It turned out to be the theft of a beer from a convenience store. Police saw a man who appeared to be the suspect walking south on S Friendswood Drive. The suspect was described as a white male between 45 and 60 years of age. Police told the suspect to stop for purposes of conducting a field investigation. The officer says the suspect was holding a box cutter with the blade open, and he refused to comply when told to stop. The suspect then allegedly lunged at the officer with the open box cutter.

The officer said that he was in fear for his life, and the police officer then allegedly shot the suspect four times. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The suspect was Toby Cummins. A grand jury had access to all of the police video recordings and audio and all witness statements connected to this police shooting. They decided this week that no criminal charges will be made against the police officer in connection with Cummins’ death.

The videos connected to this incident were just released on Wednesday of this week, May 10, 2017. They were not released previously, to the frustration of Cummins’ family and many in the public. According to Kelly Shannon, executive director of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, who spoke of the decision at that time, the city was not obligated to release the videos during an investigation. He referred to the public release of the traffic stop of Sandra Bland as a reason the police department was hesitate to release videos of the Cummins shooting.

More Facts Emerge about the Alleged Police Shooting of Teen Jordan Edwards

English: Category:Images of Dallas, Texas
English: Category:Images of Dallas, Texas (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Authorities have released information that was reportedly pivotal in the decision to charge a police officer with murder in the death of Jordan Edwards, an unarmed African-American 15-year-old who was a straight-A student at Mesquite High School. Edwards was allegedly shot by a Balch Springs, Texas, police officer on April 29, 2017, resulting in national outrage. Balch Springs is a suburb of Dallas.

It was already known that police officers were at the address where the alleged shooting took place because of a call about underage drinking at a party. The officers were first inside the house and then heard shots and went outside.

The new information is partly from two of Edwards’ friend, who were riding in the back seat of the car he was shot in.

The officer who allegedly shot Edwards went to his patrol car when he ran outside. According to the warrant for his arrest, he got his department-issued rifle, a Modern Carbine, at that time, though the documents indicate it was not clear why he took that action.

The other officer ran to the vehicle Edwards, two of his brothers, and two friends were in. That officer instructed the driver to stop the car, but he didn’t. At that time, the car moved in reverse and then that same officer showed his weapon, a handgun, and told the teen again to stop the vehicle. The driver stopped momentarily and then began moving forward, the warrant says.

At that time, the officer used his gun to punch and break the rear passenger-side window. The officer who had grabbed his rifle was behind the other officer and to the right. The officer with the rifle at that point allegedly shot at the car several times as it drove past him. One of the shots allegedly struck Edwards in the forehead.

Authorities with the Balch Springs Police Department said the department discourages officers from shooting at moving vehicles. If an officer feels he must shoot at a car, it should only be if someone’s life is in danger, and shots should only be fired at the driver’s side.

In further more recent news, Edwards’ family has filed a civil lawsuit against the police officer who allegedly shot him. The family’s lawyer cited numerous occasions in which the officer allegedly demonstrated that he had a “short fuse,” including a recent incident in which he allegedly pulled a gun on a woman who rear-ended his vehicle.

The Balch Springs Police Officer who Allegedly Shot 15-year-old Jordan Edwards is Charged with Murder

English: A police station
English: A police station (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

On Friday, May 5, 2017, the former Balch Springs, Texas, police officer who allegedly shot and killed unarmed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards was arrested and charged with the teen’s murder. The officer had worked as a law enforcement officer in Balch Springs for six years before being fired, following the alleged shooting. He turned himself in Friday and was later released on bail. His burden is to prove that he acted reasonably when the teen was allegedly shot.

The funeral for Edwards was held at the Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church on Saturday. The family recognizes that the outrage over Edwards’ death allegedly at the hands of a police officer is significant. They have asked to have time to grieve their loss before having to deal with mass protests and their loved one being made into a martyr.

Additional facts continue to be revealed about the April 29, 2017, incident which took the life of Edwards, who was an African-American student at Mesquite High School. Police had responded to a call about underage drinking at a party. Officers were inside the home where the alleged drinking party was occurring when they heard shots outside. Police officers then went outside. A vehicle full of teenagers backed out and then was headed away from police when an officer allegedly fired shots into the car.

One of the allegedly indiscriminate shots struck Edwards in the head. The shooting victim’s 16-year-old brother was driving. Those in the car later reported that, for several minutes, they didn’t know Jordan had been shot. It was approximately 15 minutes after the shooting that Edwards first received medical attention. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A search was done of the vehicle that the teens were in, and there were no weapons. Reportedly, none of the kids in the car had any history of weapons possession. In fact, it has been reported that none of them had ever had encounters with law enforcement before. By all reports, Edwards was a very likeable person who had completely stayed out of trouble.
