Coleman County Jail Suicide Case Headed to Trial
Nearly seven years after Derrek Monroe died by suicide in the Coleman County Jail, his family’s federal lawsuit may finally proceed to trial. Monroe, who had documented suicidal tendencies, was left alone in a cell with a long phone cord despite state warnings about such hazards. A jailer reportedly watched as Monroe attempted suicide but did not intervene due to a county policy that barred single officers from entering a cell alone.
Represented by Dean Malone of the Law Offices of Dean Malone, P.C., Monroe’s family alleges that Coleman County’s policies and understaffing led to his preventable death. The case highlights systemic failures in Texas jail supervision and the delays families face in seeking justice.
