Court of Appeals Rules Our Case Regarding Jamal Shaw Allowed to go to Trial

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has ruled that the family of Jamal Ali Shaw may proceed with their lawsuit against officers accused of using excessive force after Shaw died when he was tased multiple times during a seizure in jail. The court found that a jury could reasonably conclude the officers’ actions violated Shaw’s constitutional rights under the Fourteenth Amendment. The case, brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, underscores the importance of accountability when law enforcement responses to medical crises result in preventable deaths.
