Jail Inmates with Serious Medical Issues are at a Heightened Risk in Local Jails

Research shows that jail is not a place for anyone to be if they have serious health problems. Statistics suggest that up to 69% of county and city jail inmates with chronic health conditions do not receive the medical treatment that they require during incarceration. The result is often death, especially when a person’s medical needs are neglected and they develop sepsis.

Factors that contribute to a higher risk for inmates:

  • Inadequate or delayed medical care. Studies have shown that people in local jails who develop sepsis from an untreated infection are more likely to die than people with sepsis in the general population. When this happens, it is because jail inmates are denied medical treatment that is sufficiently timely, though it is a constitutional right.
  • Lack of emergency treatment. Sepsis and septic shock are health conditions that require immediate medical attention. Treatment would include antibiotics and IV fluids, which may not be promptly provided within the jail setting.
  • Pre-existing health problems. When jail inmates enter the correctional system with serious health conditions, they are often more vulnerable to developing severe infection and sepsis.

California Jail Inmate Vianna Granillo, 25, Dies of Insufficient Oxygen and Sepsis

The following is about a jail inmate who suffered from sepsis while incarcerated in a county jail and died from the preventable condition:

  • When Vianna Granillo, 25, was arrested and placed in a San Diego County jail on July 1, 2022, she was struggling with heroin addiction. She allegedly suffered extreme difficulty as she went through withdrawal in the Las Colinas Detention Facility. For four days, Ms. Granillo experienced severe diarrhea and vomiting, and no medical help was provided. A broken oxygen tank was allegedly offered to Ms. Granillo in her cell. An autopsy was conducted after her July 12, 2022, death. The medical examiner found that Vianna Granillo’s cause of death was brain damage from insufficient oxygen and sepsis from a stomach perforation.

The address of Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in San Diego County is 451 Riverview Parkway, Santee, California 92071. The California jail has an inmate capacity of 1,280.
