Should Harris County Jail send Hundreds of Detainees to this Louisiana Facility?
According to an article in The Texas Tribune on August 14, 2024, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office has sent many hundreds of detainees to the LaSalle Correctional Center in Louisiana due to overcrowding. The Louisiana jail has had multiple cases of medical neglect and denial of medical care brought against it. One of the biggest concerns about transporting detainees across the state line is that Louisiana is not obligated to operate according to rules set out by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS).
Per the article, Jaleen Anderson’s mother was shocked to learn on March 22, 2024, that he was transferred from Harris County Jail to a Louisiana facility. Before his transfer, his medical records at Harris County Jail purportedly indicated that he had no significant medical needs or conditions. Tragically, at 8:59 p.m. on April 3, 2024, Jaleen Anderson was pronounced deceased at the Hardtner Medical Center Emergency Room.
Before Mr. Anderson was moved to the Louisiana hospital, he had been experiencing seizures at the LaSalle jail facility. He was allegedly moved to a one-person cell after having two seizures. The next day, Jaleen Anderson was moved to the hospital, where he died at only 29 years old.
The LaSalle Correctional Center is at 15976 US-165, Olla, Louisiana 71465. The jail has a 755-bed capacity.
