A Bexar County Detainee Dies-4
When Ed Penix went through intake at Bexar County Jail in San Antonio, Texas, on October 5, 2023, the answer was “unknown” to the question of whether he exhibited any medical problems. On October 10, 2023, just five days later, he was pronounced deceased. The custodial death report (CDR) indicates that a nurse practitioner discovered Mr. Penix unresponsive just as they were preparing him for transport to a hospital. The nurse called a Code 1 Blue (immediate medical emergency).
A Detainee in Bexar County Jail Dies After 15 Days
Lambert Sabrsula was booked into Bexar County Jail on November 13, 2020. At that time, he did not exhibit any medical or mental health problems, according to the CDR. At 4:37 a.m. on November 28, 2020, Mr. Sabrsula was discovered unresponsive on the floor of his cell. A Code 1 Blue was initiated in unit CB, and Cpl. J. Medrano responded to the scene with Officer L. Martinez who is with a member of the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT).
Officer Martinez continued applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until a member of the jail’s medical staff took over the responsibility. Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at 5:00 a.m. and assumed CPR. At 5:14 a.m. on November 28, 2020, Paramedic M. Davis pronounced Mr. Sabrsula deceased.
An autopsy was performed, and Mr. Sabrsula’s medical cause of death was “Cardiomegaly and complications of mental health disorders.”
