A Bexar County Jail Inmate Dies on Day 4-Pt5
Ryan Adam Legg was an inmate at the Bexar County Jail in San Antonio, Texas, when he committed suicide. The 36-year-old was housed in a multiple-occupancy cell at the jail from March 21, 2022, to March 24, 2022, when he took his own life. He used a sheet attached to a light fixture to hang himself.
Since this series began, another suicide at Bexar County Jail occurred. With the death of Emmitt Earl Byrd on April 21, a custodial death has happened at least three months in a row in San Antonio. Other custodial deaths may come to light in the future since there is a 30-day deadline for filing a custodial death report (CDR) and jails sometimes exceed the deadline for filing.
Emmitt Earl Byrd Dies in Bexar County Jail
Forty-four-year-old Emmitt Earl Byrd died by suicide while in the custody of Bexar County Jail. Mr. Byrd was housed in a single cell and, on April 21, 2022, the day of his death, he was found hanging by his neck from a sheet. The sheet had been secured on the interior hinge of the cell door. According to the CDR, the deputy who found him promptly entered the cell and lifted the inmate up in order to cut his body down. CPR began to be administered immediately. Medical personnel continued the effort to revive Mr. Byrd, and the San Antonio Fire Department EMS personnel next took up the failed lifesaving efforts.
