Continuation of Recent Custodial Deaths Outside Texas
A 32-year-old male who was booked into a Maine county jail on June 1, 2022, was found in an unresponsive state in his cell three days later. A correctional officer made the discovery during a routine round of face-to-face cell checks at about 2:00 PM and called for assistance. Life-saving measures began immediately. The officer was soon joined by the medical staff and the Medical Crisis Unit. Attempts to revive the inmate were unsuccessful and he died on Saturday, June 4, 2022.
The County Sheriff said the inmate’s name will not be released until his next of kin has been notified. The local police department, the state’s Department of Corrections, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the custodial death.
The same jail was in the news last month after a 40-year-old inmate was discovered attempting suicide. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died a few days later on May 12, 2022.
In October of 2020, an inmate at the same Maine county jail was found with a towel around his neck and suspended from the top bunk in his cell. A correctional officer took quick action, and the inmate made a full recovery from his suicide attempt.
