A Brazos County Jail Inmate Dies in About 9 Hours-Pt4
Late on May 12, 2022, Terrance D’Shawn Hammond was initially detained by the College Station Police Department in College Station, Texas. Two hours later, he was transported to Brazos County Jail in Bryan. Mr. Hammond was in the process of being booked into the jail when he began experiencing medical distress. The jail’s medical staff began an evaluation and immediately started performing lifesaving efforts. He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on the morning of May 13, 2022.
A County Jail Inmate Outside Texas Dies on 6/16/22
Shawn Meldrum was 33 years old when he died in the custody of Charleston County Jail in South Carolina. Mr. Meldrum was from Wisconsin, and he is at least the fourth person to have died at the jail where he was housed at the time of his death. A fellow inmate alerted deputies that he was unresponsive. An incident report indicated that Mr. Meldrum’s death was reported at about 6:15 PM on June 16, 2022, while he was still in jail. However, he was not officially pronounced dead until he was transported to a nearby hospital.
The custodial death is under investigation. The nature of the incident has been listed as a “drug-related” death, though the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
On May 18, 2022, a woman jumped off the second story of Charleston County Jail. She died two days later at a hospital. The other two inmates who died there this year suffered medical issues. Their deaths occurred in March and May of 2022.
