Three Stages of Sepsis
From the viewpoint of many physicians, sepsis is a type of infection that develops in three stages, which are referred to as sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock. The best scenario is to treat sepsis during the first stage, which is also the mildest.
In Texas, minimum jail standards are established by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS), and that organization reports that most complaints are about medical care. If this is an indication that an inmate may develop sepsis but the jail’s medical staff may be slow in identifying the problem, stage one sepsis could easily progress to severe sepsis or deadly septic shock.
Each year about 1.5 million people are diagnosed with sepsis, a condition that kills 250,000 people every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to a global statistic, 42% of the people in intensive care units with sepsis end up dying.
