Why Do Texas County Jail Inmates Die Hours After Arrival?

It is alarming to see that inmates who are booked into Texas county and city jails are often declared deceased within hours. In this brief series, several of these tragic custodial deaths will be reviewed, all of which have occurred in 2022 alone. The four deaths happened in four different locations, those being Panhandle in Carson County TX; Bay City in Matagorda County TX; Bryan in Brazos County TX; and Plano in Collin County TX. The inmates who died within hours after being booked into a Texas county or municipal jail in one of the above-named counties are Nicholas Whatley Jr., Markist Levar Sims, Terrance D’Shawn Hammond, and Quaid Copplio Thomas.

Since the deaths of these individuals are all fairly recent, amended versions of the CDRs showing their causes of death may not yet be available.
