Why Do Inmates Often Die in Jail Soon After Incarceration?

Some patterns can’t be ignored when it comes to custodial deaths. Although suicide is the leading cause of death in county and municipal jails, more people die in jail from a variety of health issues. There have been too many occasions when deaths occur due to medical neglect, in which inmates are not provided with necessary emergency care or essential prescription medications. If an inmate dies of sepsis, it is a clear indication that the death should be investigated for possible medical neglect.

When inmates die within 24 hours or after another brief period, there are two common causes: suicide and an overdose or severe withdrawal symptoms. Most of these deaths are preventable.

Experts say there is virtually no reason that an inmate should die from suicide in jail, where missed observation rounds can be a contributing factor. Opioid overdoses, if caught quickly enough, will not result in death if Narcan is administered. Experts also say that severe withdrawal symptoms don’t need to result in death because medical treatments can prevent an individual from dying.
