Are Inmate Deaths in Local Jails Often Preventable?-Pt.4
An Inmate Dies After Being in Restraints Continued
After a continued struggle in which the inmate tried to fight the deputies off of him, he was finally secured in handcuffs. They all arrived at the private cell, and the inmate was placed on the floor so that his restraints could be removed. That’s when deputies noticed that the inmate wasn’t breathing, and his lips were blue.
Facility medical staff brought an AED to the scene, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated. The inmate was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, and, tragically, he later died. An autopsy was performed to determine the inmate’s cause of death, but the results haven’t been released.
An Inmate Dies After Being in Prone Restraint
Another tragic custodial death that took place outside Texas in December 2022 also involved restraints. It has been compared to the death of George Floyd, which has received a tremendous amount of media attention. The information initially released only indicated that the man, in his 60s, was discovered unresponsive in his cell shortly after being booked into a county jail. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
An investigation was conducted, after which a more detailed report of what occurred at the jail was released. It allegedly became evident that the inmate died after officers used a restraint tactic linked to a number of custodial deaths. Several deputies had forced the inmate onto his stomach, and multiple jailers held him down just before he became unresponsive.
