Are Inmate Deaths in Local Jails Often Preventable?-Pt.8
3 Texas Inmates Commit Suicide on 3 Consecutive Days in February 2022 Continued
Jared Jon Bell committed suicide at Travis County Jail on February 9, 2022. Soon after on February 10, Harris County Jail inmate Simon Peter Douglas took his own life 3 hours after the booking process.
So, it was for the third day in a row, at least, that a Texas inmate died of suicide in 2022 when Gilbert Shaw Medina committed suicide on February 11 in Collin County Jail. The jail is located at 4300-A Community Ave. in McKinney, TX 75071.
Mr. Medina was booked as an inmate in the McKinney jail on December 8, 2021. The intake document indicates that he made suicidal statements and exhibited mental health problems as he entered the jail.
The summary of how the death occurred found in the custodial death report (CDR) about Mr. Medina is brief. It indicates that he was housed in a single occupancy cell at the Collin County Detention Facility. During a normal cell check, a jailer saw that Mr. Medina was on the floor and appeared to be non-responsive. When detention staff went into the cell, it was observed that Mr. Medina had a ligature around his neck. It was cut off him immediately. The medical staff was called to the scene, and Mr. Medina was pronounced deceased.
The manner of death is listed as suicide and the medical cause of death was self-strangulation.
