Baris Hargrow is the 2nd Dallas County Jail Inmate to Die Within 2 Weeks

Sixty-five-year-old Baris Joe Hargrow was booked into the Dallas County Jail on March 28, 2024. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office filed a custodial death report (CDR) about Mr. Hargrow on July 1, 2025. Tragically, on June 21, 2025, at 10:18 p.m., Mr. Hargrow was discovered unresponsive in his single cell. Lifesaving measures were initially administered by jail staff and medical personnel. Mr. Hargrow was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital (PHM), where, at 11:27 p.m. the same day, Dr. Ashlyn Cooper pronounced him deceased on arrival. The CDR reflects that Mr. Hargrow’s cause of death is unknown and awaiting autopsy results.
The intake officer noted when Mr. Hargrow first arrived at the jail that he exhibited mental health problems and made suicidal statements. He did not appear to be intoxicated on drugs or alcohol, and, as to whether he exhibited medical problems, the answer was “unknown.”
Just 13 days before Mr. Hargrow’s death, 66-year-old Terry Darren Shaw also died after incarceration in Dallas County Jail, though Mr. Shaw had entered the jail only four days before the day of his passing. It is always very concerning when deaths are more than isolated incidents in local jails. Jails across America are sometimes justifiably spotlighted because their rate of inmate deaths far exceeds the average.
Dallas County Jail aka Lew Sterrett Justice Center is at 111 Commerce St, Dallas, TX 75207. The Dallas jail system’s total capacity is 7,100 inmates.
