Cameron County, Texas Jail Fails State Inspection
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) has recently listed Cameron County Jail in Texas as a Non-Compliant Jail on the TCJS website. A Notice of Non-Compliance was issued on June 14, 2023. It specifies the minimum jail standard the jail was cited for in a jail inspection report issued on June 6, 2023. TCJS inspectors allege that the Brownsville, Texas, jail violated 1 minimum jail standard.

Rule §275.04~Staff
Cameron County Jail has been cited for violating Rule §275.4~Staff, which is in the chapter on the Supervision of Inmates. Inmates shall be supervised by an adequate number of jailers to comply with state law and this chapter. One jailer shall be provided on each floor of the facility where 10 or more inmates are housed, with no less than 1 jailer per 48 inmates or increment thereof on each floor for direct inmate supervision. This jailer shall provide documented visual inmate supervision not less than once every 60 minutes. Sufficient staff to include supervisors, jailers, and other essential personnel as accepted by the Commission shall be provided to perform required functions.

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, the same facility had 828 inmates in housing units with 9 officers supervising (1:92 ratio). Therefore, the facility was not compliant with minimum jail standards of 1:48 ratio of officers to inmates.
