What Problems Are Caused by Jail Overcrowding?
Studies clearly show that overcrowded conditions put detainees at risk. Overcrowding occurs when correctional facilities house more inmates than their intended capacity. Overcrowding places excessive strain on jail staff and leads to heightened security risks, increased violence, and compromised rehabilitation efforts.
In one study on the effects of overcrowding in jails, questionnaires were administered to detainees and biographical information was obtained from them. A top finding from the results of the study was that sustained conditions of overcrowding have a wide range of negative psychological and physiological effects, including higher suicide and death rates, increased illness complaint rates, and higher disciplinary infraction rates.
