Georgia’s GBI Released Autopsy Results for Mercedes Brittany Brackett

White County, Georgia, deputies arrested 28-year-old Mercedes Brittany Brackett for a probation violation on August 5, 2020. She was then booked into the White County Detention Center. During intake, jail records show that Ms. Brackett was medically evaluated. She complained of various injuries and illnesses at the time and reported using heroin.

Tragically, two days later, at approximately 8:30 a.m., she was reportedly found unresponsive in a cell. Efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. Mercedes Brackett was pronounced deceased inside the jail on August 7, 2020. The jail reported that Ms. Brackett was last known to be alive and appeared to be lethargic 40 minutes before the discovery that she was unresponsive.

On October 30, 2023, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released new details about Ms. Brackett’s death. The autopsy report revealed that she had a ruptured spleen, and she died from a severe staph infection. Ms. Brackett’s official cause of death, according to the medical examiner (ME), was “staphylococcal sepsis with splenic rupture and peritonitis.” ‘’There were signs of blunt force trauma to her torso, arms, and legs. However, the ME was not able to determine the cause of her ruptured spleen. Her manner of death is listed as “undetermined.”

The White County Detention Center is at 1210 Hulsey Rd, Cleveland, Georgia 30528. The jail has a bed capacity of 176.

An Inmate at a County or Municipal Jail Dies of Sepsis

When an inmate dies of sepsis in any U.S. jail—or prison, for that matter–red flags should be raised and further investigation into the death may be appropriate. It is reasonable to ask whether jail medical personnel or other jail staff may have noticed signs of the severe effects of an infection, the type that results in the development of sepsis. The bottom line is that medical neglect may have been a factor in a custodial death caused by sepsis.

There is an acronym for SEPSIS that can be used to remember the key signs that an individual has sepsis:

  • Shivering, feeling very cold, or having a high fever.
  • Extreme discomfort or pain that is elevated compared to the original infection.
  • Pale, sweaty, or clammy skin.
  • Sleepiness, disorientation, confusion, or difficulty speaking.
  • I feel as though I may be dying, whether from a rapid heart rate or the feeling of having a severe health condition.
  • Shortness of breath, a feeling of being unable to catch your breath, or difficulty breathing.
