Inmate Janette Navarro Dies in St. Joseph County Jail IN

Per an Indiana news outlet, Janette Navarro, who was incarcerated in St. Joseph County Jail, was discovered unresponsive in her cell at approximately 3:20 a.m. on July 13, 2025. The correctional officers who found her immediately began lifesaving efforts. They continued until medics arrived. Tragically, 28-year-old Janette Navarro was pronounced deceased in her cell.

No foul play is suspected at this time. The Indiana State Police were called in to handle the investigation into Ms. Navarro’s death, which is the usual procedure when custodial deaths occur. Any further information will be released by the Indiana State Police.

A 3rd Athens-Clarke County Jail Inmate Has Died since April 22, 2025

Recent custodial deaths and other happenings at Athens-Clarke County Jail are surely raising grave concerns among members of the community. On Tuesday alone, one inmate died, and two others possibly overdosed and were hospitalized. An investigation into the possibility of dangerous, illicit drugs being smuggled into Athens-Clarke County Jail is being conducted by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, per a release from the sheriff’s department.

Thirty-one-year-old Boycie Howard was found unresponsive by Athens-Clarke County Jail staff at approximately 10:49 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2025. According to jail officials, Mr. Howard was discovered with an unknown medical problem in one of the jail’s housing units. Jail staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Efforts to resuscitate Mr. Howard were continued by emergency medical services (EMS) and the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department after they arrived. Mr. Howard was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an investigation into Mr. Howard’s death.

The two surviving inmates who were hospitalized on Tuesday are ages 28 and 36. A public information officer for the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office said they were being evaluated for possible drug overdoses after suspected drugs were found by deputies inside the housing unit.

When 32-year-old Shabazz Wingfield tragically died on May 5, 2025, it was the second Athens-Clarke County Jail inmate death in three weeks. Mr. Wingfield was discovered unresponsive in his cell by jail staff at about 4:30 p.m. Sadly, lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and Mr. Wingfield was pronounced deceased the same day. Mr. Wingfield had been in the Athens, Georgia, jail since January 29, 2025. He died of the toxic effects of methamphetamine and fentanyl, per the autopsy report.

Torrance Bernard Bishop was booked into Athens-Clarke County Jail in November 2024. He was ordered by a judge in January 2025 to undergo a mental evaluation prior to trial. Sadly, on April 22, 2025, Mr. Bishop was found having a medical emergency at about 8 a.m. Lifesaving efforts included transporting him to a local hospital, but Torrance Bernard Bishop, 39, was pronounced deceased shortly before 10 a.m.
