Inmate Richard Sprinkel Was Found Deceased in an Intake Unit in a Virginia Jail
In Virginia news dated April 22, 2025, an inmate in Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail was discovered deceased.
According to the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Richard Sprinkel, 57, was discovered unresponsive in the single-occupancy cell in the intake unit where he had been placed. It happened at about 10:57 a.m. on April 22, 2025, when a correctional deputy was making rounds to check on inmates at that time. The deputy immediately contacted emergency medical services (EMS) and began providing lifesaving aid to Mr. Sprinkel. EMS hastily arrived and continued efforts to resuscitate the man. Ultimately, Richard Jeffrey Sprinkel was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Cell checks by facility police at the jail are to take place twice every 60 minutes. The Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Virginia State Police have been asked to conduct an independent review after the BCSO’s own personnel have investigated the events surrounding Mr. Sprinkel’s death. The BCSO said foul play is not suspected, but officials said an autopsy will be conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of Mr. Sprinkel’s death.
The sheriff’s office stated that Mr. Sprinkel was pending classification, which is why he was in the intake unit. Also, surveillance video captured the entire incident. An investigation is ongoing.
In addition, it was reported that another inmate was found deceased from an apparent suicide in Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail on the same day that Richard Sprinkel died. The 39-year-old man was discovered hanging, having used shredded jumpsuit fabric wrapped around part of a vent in his cell.
Botetourt-Craig Regional Jail is located at 205 N Roanoke St, Fincastle, Virginia 24090. The facility has a bed capacity of 214 and the ability to increase inmate capacity by an additional 124 in the future.
