Jail Wrongful Death Texas – A Spate of Custodial Deaths has One State Proposing Jail Reform – Part 16

Another custodial death that has come under scrutiny involves a man who previously spent 14 years in prison beginning at age 18. After serving his sentence, the man began working and showed great signs of moving on with a new beginning. However, he began to suffer from mental illness, as he had episodes of paranoia and insomnia.

After working for several years for a man who had appreciated his diligence, the mental health problems led to his being let go from his job. Later, the former employee frequently harassed his former boss. Finally, the employer felt he had no choice but to press charges and says that his hope was that the man would get help at a mental hospital.

Instead, the mentally ill person was placed under arrest. He resisted arrest, however, and exhibited great strength. According to the family, what ensued was that their loved one was handcuffed and beaten to death by police officers.

This is one of the instances in which reporting has been false. The homicide was not reflected as an event that was connected to the jail. Consequently, no one has been charged for the man’s death.
