Joel Barrett Dies Hours After Booking into a New Mexico Jail
In New Mexico news dated October 11, 2025, a 29-year-old charged with riding a bicycle without front lights or other equipment and battery upon a peace officer was booked into the Eddy County Detention Center on Thursday night and died a few hours later.
Inmate Joel Barrett, 29, suffered an unspecified medical emergency and was pronounced deceased on Thursday, October 9, 2025, according to the jail authorities. It was further announced that every inmate is examined by medical personnel at the jail, and Mr. Barrett’s behavior did not call for an additional evaluation.
There was an altercation between Mr. Barrett and law enforcement at the time of his arrest. After stopping Mr. Barrett at around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday with concerns about his bicycle having no headlamp, an officer discovered that there was a bench warrant for his arrest. Mr. Barrett allegedly became upset and grabbed the officer’s fingers. Mr. Barrett also allegedly became combative, causing the officer to suffer discomfort and pain. Mr. Barret was then placed in custody after being thrown to the ground.
In a statement of probable cause filed in the Carlsbad Magistrate Court, upon entering the jail, Mr. Barrett told the nursing staff he had no injuries and did not need medical attention.
According to the facility’s inmate lookup website, Mr. Barrett was in the cell block called “HALLWAY.” Authorities stated that the designated cell called “HALLWAY” Mr. Barrett was sent to is a facility where inmates with specific medical needs are managed. But it was also stated that there isn’t one designated reason for placing inmates in that housing unit.
The address of the Eddy County Detention Center is 1500 N. Canal Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220. The jail’s inmate capacity is approximately 210.
