According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the investigation of the death of an unnamed inmate who died on Saturday, September 6, 2025, is underway and not to be confused with the death of Justin A. Davis, who also died in the custody of Union County Jail but on Thursday, September 4. No other facts are known about the unnamed individual, and there is no indication that the two cases are connected.

Mr. Davis was discovered unresponsive in his cell on August 29, 2025. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and he was transported to a nearby hospital. Justin Davis, still in the jail’s custody, was pronounced deceased on September 4.

The address of Union City Jail is 130 Veteran’s Street, Maynardville, Tennessee, 37807.

Withdrawal Deaths in U.S. Jails

Suicide is a primary reason for deaths in county and municipal jails, including about 25% of suicide deaths that occur in the first 24 hours of incarceration. Withdrawal symptoms are also the cause of many jail deaths that happen quickly. The following are some tragic withdrawal death stories that occurred in U.S. jails.

  • David Stojcevski, 32, was addicted to opioids when he was booked into Macomb County Jail in Michigan in June 2014. He allegedly suffered 16 days of uncontrolled diarrhea and vomiting and lost 50 pounds before he ultimately died. The address of Macomb County Jail is 43565 Elizabeth Road Mount Clemens, Michigan, 48043.
  • Lindsay Kronberger, 24, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail in Washington in January 2014. She weighed only 95 pounds, and a nurse found that she had low blood pressure and a high heart rate. Ms. Kronberger’s request to go to a hospital was allegedly denied. Allegedly, she vomited in one cell after another because she was too weak to walk or stand. Video surveillance shows that a jail guard mocked her as she lay dying. She eventually died in her cell. The address of Snohomish County Jail is 3025 Oakes Ave, Everett, Washington 98201.
  • In May 2016, Marion Herrara was booked into Weber County Jail in Utah. Ms. Herrara, 40, was going through heroin withdrawal and died of dehydration four days after being booked into the jail. The address of Weber County Jail is 370 26th St, Ogden, Utah 84401.
  • Madeline Pitkin was only 26 years old and struggled with an opioid addiction. She was booked into the Washington County Jail on a traffic violation in Oregon in April 2014. She went through an opioid detox with allegedly no medical help, though she allegedly begged for health care. She died after seven days. The sheriff was reportedly shocked that the third-party healthcare company allegedly refused to respond to Ms. Pitkin’s needs. He asked the County District Attorney to assign the County’s major crimes team to conduct a criminal investigation into her death. The address of the Washington County Jail is 215 SW Adams Ave, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123.
  • A 26-year-old opioid addict, Madison Bailee Deal was arrested and booked into Tennessee’s Silverdale Detention Facility in August 2016. As she suffered withdrawal symptoms, she begged her mother to get her transferred to a hospital. Sadly, the jail allegedly did not ensure that she was treated for her symptoms. When going through withdrawal, she inhaled vomit and ultimately died due to the resulting case of pneumonia that developed. The Silverdale Detention Facility is at 6415 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee, 37421.
