Milam County Jail is now listed as non-compliant on the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) website. A special jail inspection report was issued on May 28, 2025. The Cameron, Texas, jail was found non-compliant with three minimum jail standards. Each citation involves a failure related to supervision. The following was conveyed by TCJS inspectors in notes for each of the three violations, as follows:

  • It was determined during the investigation of complaint cases #40928 and #41053 that 30-minute paper observation rounds were late.
  • As a result of investigations of the same two complaint cases listed above, it was determined that medical-ordered head injury observation and water logs were not conducted according to orders.
  • During the investigation of complaint case #41053, it was determined that 3 out of 3 15-minute observation log entries were late.

The address of Milam County Jail is 512 N Jefferson Ave. in Cameron, Texas 76520. The inmate capacity is 160.

An Inmate in Alabama’s Walker County Died After a String of Alleged Abuses

Anthony “Tony” Mitchell had a history of mental health problems and drug addiction, and he had been experiencing severe delusions when police officers went to his home for a welfare check. A violent altercation with police occurred, and Mr. Mitchell was booked into Walker County Jail in Alabama. Tragically, he died from hypothermia two weeks later. His internal body temperature suggested that he had seemingly been placed inside the jail’s freezer.

No video evidence has been found to support the suggestion that Mr. Mitchell spent time in the jail’s freezer. Numerous other egregious acts were perpetrated against him, however, making such an occurrence seem plausible. The following are among the abuses Mr. Mitchell allegedly suffered:

  • During his two weeks of incarceration, Mr. Mitchell was allegedly left completely naked in a cell purportedly the equivalent of a dog kennel. The concrete cell had no bedding, and a drain in the floor was to be used as a toilet.
  • Mr. Mitchell was already in an obvious state of malnourishment, yet his set of false teeth was taken from him after a tasing incident, and they were not returned. He was then unable to properly eat food.
  • The mistreatment that Mr. Mitchell suffered in Walker County Jail “apparently worsened,” and on January 26, 2023–the day of his death–he was taken to a local hospital. That was when the discovery was made that his internal body temperature was a shocking 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
