TCJS Currently Lists Liberty County Jail 6 Times for Non-Compliance

Front of Jail Cell

There were already five notices of non-compliance addressed to Liberty County Jail on the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) website when another was recently added. A special jail inspection report was issued on May 21, 2025, showing that TCJS has cited the Beaumont jail for failing to comply with requirements related to Medication Administration Records (MARs). TCJS inspectors share the following information:

  • A complaint received from a Liberty County Jail inmate was reviewed, and it was determined that medical records were not maintained accurately and clearly to reflect the inmate’s dispensed medication on the MAR sheet.

Liberty County Jail is at 2400 Beaumont Ave, Liberty, TX 77575. The Beaumont jail has an approximate inmate capacity of 285.

3 Inmate Suicides Occur in Liberty County Jail Within 10 Months

Custodial death reports filed by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office show that at least three of the inmates at Liberty County Jail died by suicide within about a 10-month period. Continuous non-compliance with minimum jail standards and frequent inmate deaths are alarming realities that understandably raise red flags. The following are a few details about the three suicides.

  • On May 10, 2023, a 26-year-old man died by suicide in Liberty County Jail. The medical cause of death is listed as asphyxia by hanging. The young man had entered the jail on February 12, 2023, and he was housed in a single cell. In response to questions about exhibiting mental health problems and making suicidal statements, the CDR shows “unknown.”
  • A 27-year-old man was booked into Liberty County Jail on April 25, 2023, and died from suicide on June 3, 2023. On the unspecified day the man was found hanging, his family had requested two separate welfare checks. On the second welfare check, he was found in the shower hanging from a bedsheet around his neck. Having released the inmate from the jail’s custody, the jail staff did not learn of the man’s date of death until his family collected his property on June 5, 2023.
  • A 59-year-old man was booked into Liberty County Jail on June 20, 2023. Tragically, he died by suicide after being found hanging in the shower from a bedsheet. Lifesaving measures began as soon as medical staff arrived. The man was transported to Liberty Dayton Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased on March 29, 2024.
