A Woman’s Death in the Custody of Ohio’s Cuyahoga County Jail is Ruled a Homicide
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has determined that the death of 39-year-old Tasha Grant, who passed away while in the custody of Cuyahoga County Jail in Ohio earlier this year, was a homicide. However, officials clarified that this classification does not automatically imply criminal intent or wrongdoing; any potential misconduct will be evaluated through the legal process.
According to public records, Ms. Grant was booked into the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center on April 17, 2025. Nineteen days later, on May 2, she was transported to MetroHealth Hospital after reporting chest pain.
While still hospitalized on May 5, Ms. Grant reportedly became agitated and required physical restraint, as documented in the autopsy report released Thursday.
According to a hospital police report, Tasha Grant, who was a double leg amputee, reportedly threw herself onto the floor and refused to cooperate with hospital staff.
When medical personnel were unable to get her back into bed, officers were called to assist. Police records state that Ms. Grant became combative and made threats, attempting to move toward the officers aggressively.
Officers described taking hold of Ms. Grant’s arms, waist, and torso to lift her back onto the bed. One officer noted in the report that he placed his hands on her back to keep her restrained as she continued to resist.
Afterward, medical staff administered medication, and a deputy secured Ms. Grant to the bed with handcuffs. Roughly 13 minutes later, Tasha Grant went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased on May 5, 2025, according to the autopsy findings.
The autopsy report lists her cause of death as “physical restraint in the setting of congestive heart failure,” and classifies the manner of death as homicide.
An investigation by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department remains ongoing.
The Cuyahoga County Jail, also known as the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, is at 1215 W 3rd St, Cleveland, Ohio 44113. The jail has a current inmate capacity of 1,886.
