An Alleged Case of a Preventable Suicide in Marion County Jail
On October 8, 2008, David Thomas Dean was found hanging by his neck from a bed sheet in Marion County Jail, Florida. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased the next day. Mr. Dean had been booked into the jail about three months earlier on July 29. The investigation into his death was assigned to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). According to the FDLE investigator who handled the case, an autopsy concluded that Mr. Dean took his own life.
Jeannie Dean, widow of the deceased, didn’t dispute her husband’s cause of death. She claimed that the jail had failed to protect him, saying that, while incarcerated, he had made repeated remarks about killing himself.
The FDLE investigator informed Ms. Dean that a psychiatrist had cleared her husband, and she claims that he also told her that he continued to report suicidal thoughts to everyone who would listen, including a corrections officer, who allegedly disregarded the comments.
Ms. Dean also claimed that other inmates taunted her husband and encouraged him, providing instructions on how to do it. The spokesperson for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department said that none of her accusations were known until after her husband’s tragic death.
The address of Marion County Jail is 3290 NW 10th St, Ocala, FL 34475. The total bed capacity of the jail is 1,924.
