Ryan Postoak Dies in Bexar County Jail
Ryan James Postoak, 34, was booked into Bexar County Jail at 6:19 a.m. on September 11, 2025. Tragically, Mr. Postoak died in the jail less than 20 hours later.
A custodial death report (CDR) about Mr. Postoak was filed by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) on September 17, 2025. It shows Mr. Postoak’s cause of death is unknown, and autopsy results are pending. The CDR doesn’t reveal much that would provide details about his cause of death. However, during the booking process, he appeared intoxicated on alcohol or drugs. Also, he was charged with driving while intoxicated and for a collision involving minor damage.
The summary of how Mr. Postoak’s death occurred provides a brief account of what happened the day after his arrival at the jail. A deputy called a code one to cell #1253 at about 1:08 a.m. because Inmate Postoak appeared to be having a seizure. Two sergeants responded and upgraded the code one to a code one blue at 1:11 a.m. Lifesaving measures began immediately.
Staff with the University Health System Adult Detention Health Program (UH) arrived in the unit and assumed lifesaving measures. The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) emergency medical technicians (EMTs) arrived at approximately 1:26 a.m. The inmate succumbed, and the medical director for the SAFD pronounced Ryan Postoak deceased at 1:50 a.m. on September 12, 2025.
UH has provided medical services for inmates at the Bexar County jail since 1995. After Mr. Postoak’s death, UH responded to a media request for comments. Find their full statement here. Among other statements, UH says that detainees who exhibit or report symptoms of withdrawal are managed by qualified health care professionals.
Another news source added that a cellmate of Mr. Postoak used the intercom to contact jail staff, alerting them that he appeared to be having a seizure. In addition, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the unit where Mr. Postoak was housed was designated for inmates “receiving detox treatment for withdrawal symptoms.” BCSO also released a statement saying that Mr. Postoak suffered a medical episode “compounded by withdrawal symptoms.”
Mr. Postoak’s exact cause of death is under investigation. His was the 10th inmate death at Bexar County Jail this year.
