Shelby County Jail Inmate Christopher Ross is Paralyzed After a Stabbing

In Memphis, Tennessee, news, Christopher Ross, 31, was booked into the Shelby County Jail on July 21, 2025, on drug-related charges, according to his Aunt Karen Fisher. On August 6, 2025, at about 8:45 a.m., fellow inmate Kokou Sanoumeg addressed Mr. Ross about missing some commissary items. Mr. Ross was getting up, about to explain that he didn’t steal anything from anybody. Before he knew it, Mr. Ross said, Sanoumeg was “sticking me.”
Mr. Ross was being stabbed repeatedly with a self-fashioned weapon that Sanoumeg made. At first, jail officers didn’t try to stop the attack, Mr. Ross said, but they sprayed something on Sanoumeg. Meanwhile, Mr. Ross was stabbed a total of 17 times.
Once jail staff intervened, they provided Mr. Ross with medical assistance. The Memphis Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported Mr. Ross in an ambulance to Region One Hospital. Mr. Ross was in non-critical condition. He suffered stab wounds to his neck, head, back, arm, and torso. The incident has left Mr. Ross paralyzed. His family says on August 8, they learned through Facebook about his being stabbed.
Records that were shared with the press revealed that Sanoumeg was previously in trouble with the law. In June 2024, he was charged with theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm, drugs, and aggravated criminal trespassing. However, due to a lack of prosecution, those charges were dismissed.
More recently, Sanoumeg was arrested and charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun and other related offenses. Then, in July, he was arrested for possession of cocaine. Sanoumeg has been charged with aggravated assault in the stabbing of Mr. Ross.
Sanoumeg remains in Shelby County Jail, and Mr. Ross is still hospitalized as a result of the violent attack.
The press reported that this is one of a host of incidents that have occurred in recent months in the Shelby County Jail. Problems are exacerbated because of overcrowding, understaffing, and lengthy booking and processing times. At least 7 inmates have died in the jail’s custody this year, and at least two of those were drug overdoses.
The Shelby County Jail is located at 201 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38103. The jail’s bed capacity is 2,813.
An Inmate with a History of Excessive Violence Kills Another Inmate in Cook County Jail
Chaos erupted on August 8, 2023, in the mental health services wing of the Cook County Jail. Accused killer Daquan Houston suddenly attacked Johnny Hendrix, both of whom were getting mental health treatment. Body camera footage captured the violent attack. Houston struck Mr. Hendrix, who dropped to the ground. Then Houston began to jump on Mr. Hendrix’s head with both feet, an officer said.
Mr. Hendrix suffered multiple explosive impacts that caused severe injuries. Tragically, Mr. Hendrix was pronounced deceased later that day.
News investigators found that Houston had a history of attacking sheriff’s officers inside the jail and of attacking other inmates. He was classified with an orange alert identification card, signifying that he was a verified threat to safety and security.
Houston had been at Cook County Jail for three years, and what is hard to understand is why he was housed with other inmates.
Cook County Jail is at 2700 S California Ave, Chicago, IL 60608. Cook County Jail has an inmate capacity of up to 12,000. It is the largest single-site jail in the U.S.
