Richard Martin Lenz, Jr. was booked into Fannin County Jail on August 28, 2025. Tragically, at 59, Mr. Lenz died in the jail’s custody on October 5, 2025. A custodial death report (CDR) about Mr. Lenz was filed by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office the following day.

The CDR shows that Mr. Lenz exhibited medical health problems at the time of booking. On September 30, Mr. Lenz was moved to Hunt Regional Medical Center at 4215 Joe Ramsey Blvd E in Greenville, Texas, in Hunt County. He went into the hospital for a pre-existing condition and underwent two surgeries related to a tumor found in his abdominal area.

Although his official cause of death is awaiting autopsy results, the summary of how Mr. Lenz’s death occurred indicates that on October 5, he was septic and had cardiac failure. The hospital staff unsuccessfully attempted resuscitation. His pending medical cause of death says that Mr. Lenz was in the hospital under medical care for a tumor in the abdomen.

Fannin County Detention Facility is at 2389 Silo Rd, Bonham, TX 75418. The combined inmate capacity of the Fannin County Jail and the Fannin County Detention Facility is 528.

A Fatal Flaw in Texas Jails?

After the death of a jail inmate in the U.S., it sometimes follows that the incarcerated individual suffered from painful medical conditions, but their cries were ignored. A warning signal that something likely went wrong in the care of an inmate is when sepsis is listed as a cause of death. This is a serious condition that can usually be resolved with the administration of simple antibiotics due to the fact that it stems from infection.

One woman died in 2023 after incarceration in Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center, where jailers blamed her illness and increasing pain on junk food, namely hot Cheetos and Takis. As her body quickly failed her, an infection went septic, entering her bloodstream and ravaging her organs.

For three days, she suffered horrible pain before the jail took her in a non-medical vehicle to a local hospital. The day after her arrival, she underwent surgery to remove her gallbladder, which had become gangrenous, yet continued to worsen. Her condition deteriorated rapidly. After enduring an 11-day hospital stay during which she suffered multiple organ failure, she died at 45 on April 22, 2023. The doctor listed her cause of death as acute sepsis without septic shock, metabolic acidosis, and septic shock. No autopsy was performed.

The address of Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center is 701 E El Cibolo Rd, Edinburg, Texas 78541.
