Why is Suicide Prevalent in Jails?
Suicide is the leading cause of death in local jails, and it has been for many years. A report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that suicide was the cause of 30% of jail deaths from 2000 through 2019. The total number of jail suicide deaths during those years was 6,217. The suicide rate in jails in 2019 was more than double that of the general public.
The Justice Department and a 2020 Reuters investigation did studies to determine why people take their lives in jails so often. Each of their findings corroborated the others’. They determined that there are three primary drivers.
First, a significant proportion of detainees in jails struggle with substance abuse, mental illness, homelessness, and unemployment—all symptoms of poverty.
Second, there is the prevalence of jail inmates with serious mental health needs, which jails are ill-equipped to handle, based on the goals, resources, design, and operation of most city and county jails.
Third, detainees experience terrible jail environments, which tend to be characterized by unsanitary conditions, bright lights, loud and unpredictable noises, and, in many jails, a violent and threatening atmosphere.
After the in-custody suicide death of Sandra Bland in Waller County Jail, a corrections expert described the devastation of experiencing a total and immediate loss of control over your physical being. A significant percentage of jail suicides occur within the first 24 hours after admission, and nearly half of the suicides happen within the first week of incarceration.
Waller County Jail’s address is 100 Sheriff R Glenn Smith Dr, Hempstead, TX 77445.
Are Jails Often Responsible for Suicide Deaths?
Investigations into jails with especially high rates of suicide sometimes expose jail practices that contribute to these terrible statistics. For instance, when a surge of self-harm and suicides occurred at Rikers Island in New York City, it was determined that only one-fourth of the corrections staff reported that their suicide prevention training had been completed. Likewise, Indiana jails were recently investigated, and staff shortages and a lack of training or expertise among jail staff resulted in many suicide attempts occurring openly, including among those under video surveillance and detainees on suicide watch.
It is generally recognized that effective suicide prevention practices in jails call for a multi-pronged approach. Implementing a comprehensive suicide prevention program includes frequent observation, prompt intervention, staff training, and effective communication between staff.
