Wise County Jail Fails State Inspection

Following a jail inspection on June 25, 2026, in Wise County, the Decatur, Texas jail was cited for allegedly violating two minimum jail standards. Wise County Jail is now listed on the non-compliance page of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) website. In addition, TCJS sent the Wise County Sheriff’s Office a notice of noncompliance on the same date as the inspection.
Both of the Wise County violations are in the chapter on Life Safety Rules, one under the topic of inspections, maintenance, and testing, and the other regarding testing emergency power equipment. The following is noted by the TCJS Inspector regarding both areas of noncompliance:
- The fire panel was discovered to be in trouble mode and could not be cleared.
- The monthly load tests required for the facility generator were not conducted and/or logged for October 2025, November 2025, or January 2026.
Inmates can be harmed when jails fail to meet minimum jail standards. When custodial deaths occur, special jail inspections are conducted to determine whether any of the jail’s practices are putting inmates at risk, and sometimes such is discovered. For instance, from year to year, failures of supervision in Texas jails are found to be associated with inmate deaths.
During an April 2023 inspection of Wise County Jail, TCJS found that blood pressure checks were not completed in accordance with the nurse practitioner’s instructions. Three months later, a Wise County Jail inmate died from health complications. Since the former inspection provided an insight into past deficiencies in providing inmates with prescribed medical care, scrutiny into the level of health care that was provided to the deceased would have been called for.
The Wise County Jail is at 200 Rook Ramsey Dr, Decatur, Texas 76234. The jail has an approximate bed capacity of 338.
Support for Families Following a Death in Jail Custody
A person does not lose their constitutional rights simply because they are being held in a city or county jail. Correctional facilities have a legal responsibility to provide reasonably safe living conditions, appropriate supervision, and necessary medical care. When those duties are not fulfilled—whether because of delayed medical treatment, ignored health concerns, unsafe conditions, or other forms of neglect—the consequences can be devastating and may warrant legal review.
If your loved one died while incarcerated and you believe inadequate medical care, abuse, or other failures within the jail contributed to the loss, the Law Offices of Dean Malone, P.C. may be able to help. Our practice is dedicated to representing families in cases involving in-custody deaths. We carefully examine the available evidence, including medical records, incident reports, and jail documentation, to determine whether preventable failures or violations of constitutional rights may have occurred.
Our goal is to help families obtain answers, understand their legal rights, and seek accountability when appropriate. We offer free case evaluations, and we can be reached 24 hours a day by phone, text message, or through our secure online contact form.
To learn more about the issues surrounding deaths in custody, we also invite families to visit the Resources section of our website and review our Jail Deaths Family Guide, which provides helpful information about the investigative process and the legal options that may be available after the loss of a loved one.
