Wrongful Death in Jail Lawyer/Attorney in Texas: Brazos County Jail

Brazos County Jail is located at 1835 Sandy Point Road, Bryan, Texas 77807; and the phone number is (979) 361-4800. The jail was built in 2010, and the inmate capacity at Brazos County Jail is 1,087. Among the communities served in Brazos County are College Station, Bryan, Navasota, Wellborn, Kurten, and Millican. The Brazos County Sheriff runs the county jail, and the procedures and guidelines are established and enforced by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS).

Mental Disabilities/Suicide Prevention Plan

Brazos County Jail, like all Texas jails, is required to develop a plan for handling inmates with mental disabilities and those who may be at risk for attempting suicide. The plan, which should be designed to prevent custodial suicides, must be developed in coordination with mental and medical health officials approved by TCJS. The following are some of the elements that must be included in the plan:

  • Training is an essential element of suicide prevention plans in jails. Staff members should be trained on how to recognize, supervise, document, and handle inmates who are potentially suicidal and/or mentally disabled. Staff members responsible for intake screening should be provided with supplemental training.
  • Properly following procedures for intake screening is vital because inmates who are observed to be or are known to be potentially suicidal and/or mentally disabled must be identified. Once identified, additional procedures are required. For example, at-risk inmates are housed and supervised differently from the general inmate population.
