What Usually Turns Out to be the Cause of Death of Inmates Found Unresponsive in Jail Cells?
On any given day in the U.S., you can find several news stories reporting that an inmate was recently found unresponsive in the cell of whichever U.S. jail he was housed in during his incarceration. In virtually all these tragic stories, the inmate was then pronounced deceased in the jail or after being transported to a hospital.
Seldom are more details provided other than naming the law enforcement agencies that are cooperating to conduct an ongoing investigation into the death. Some say right up front that the results of an autopsy will not be known until the toxicology analysis is completed, which can take approximately 3 months.
The causes of death of these inmates, officially determined up to months later, aren’t usually made public unless jail neglect of some kind was allegedly discovered during the investigations into their deaths. At the Law Offices of Dean Malone, P.C., we’ve seen that many jail deaths were allegedly or potentially caused by jail neglect, for which there should be accountability.
- One form of jail neglect resulting in death is when an inmate known to be suicidal commits suicide because the jail staff were lax in providing the strict supervision required for at-risk inmates. Some corrections experts believe that virtually all jail suicides are preventable suicides.
- Medical neglect is often found to have been the cause of an inmate’s death.
- On many occasions, it turns out that inmates found unresponsive in their cells needed medical treatment for acute withdrawal symptoms. These withdrawal deaths are often said to have been preventable.
Some of the most horrific jail death cases that we have seen were the result of jail abuse and neglect of mentally ill inmates. An unforgettable story of tragedy, 35-year-old LaShawn Thompson died under unimaginable circumstances in the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sept. 13, 2022.
The address of Fulton County Jail is 901 Rice St NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30318.
