In Florida news dated December 5, 2025, officials with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) report that an inmate has died in Pinellas County Jail.

Detectives with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office are examining the circumstances surrounding the death of 56-year-old Matthew Marchione, who died inside Florida’s Pinellas County Jail after a medical emergency.

Mr. Marchione had been arrested by the Pinellas Park Police Department and booked into the jail on November 16, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m. According to officials, he remained in jail until December 3, 2025, when detention staff observed that he had sustained a self-inflicted laceration above his right eyebrow. He was transported to a local hospital for medical assessment.

Authorities reported that after Mr. Marchione was returned to the facility at roughly 10:13 p.m., he became unresponsive. Jail medical personnel and detention officers initiated emergency care, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Matthew Marchione was pronounced deceased in the Pinellas County Jail at 11:01 p.m. on December 3, 2025.

PCSO stated that, based on the information currently available, there is no indication that Mr. Marchione was involved in any physical altercations with other inmates or staff before his death. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the events leading up to the incident, including Mr. Marchione’s medical condition, his mental-health status, and the jail’s response.

Pinellas County Jail is at 14400 49th Street N, Clearwater, Florida 33762. The jail’s inmate capacity is approximately 3,000.

Homicide Ruling in Alabama Jail Death Raises Serious Concerns About Medical Neglect and Conditions of Confinement

In news from February 2024, newly released records obtained by the family of Tony Mitchell reveal that the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences has officially ruled his death a homicide. While only the death certificate has been made public, it identifies Mr. Mitchell’s cause of death as hypothermia, with contributing factors including sepsis caused by infected injuries he sustained while jailed—injuries that his family alleges were the result of significant medical neglect.

Mr. Mitchell was arrested on January 12, 2023, and booked into the Walker County Jail. Approximately two weeks later, he was transported to Walker Baptist Medical Center not by ambulance but in a deputy’s patrol vehicle, an unusual choice given the severity of his medical condition. His transfer followed an incident captured on internal jail surveillance footage, which shows officers carrying what appears to be an unconscious and severely deteriorated Mr. Mitchell from the facility. That footage prompted national scrutiny, particularly after allegations surfaced in federal filings that Mr. Mitchell may have been placed in a freezer during his incarceration.

Upon arrival at the emergency department, medical staff documented that Mr. Mitchell was in profound medical distress. Reports state he was exhibiting agonal breathing, taking only two to four breaths per minute, and that he was unresponsive, pulseless, and cold to the touch. Hospital records further note that his core body temperature measured just 72 degrees, an extreme level indicative of severe hypothermia.

Both the FBI and the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation are now conducting criminal investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mitchell’s death. To date, neither agency has publicly commented on the findings or the scope of their review.

Mr. Mitchell’s family has made allegations against the jail, including unconstitutional conditions of confinement, medical neglect, and systemic misconduct within the jail.

The address of the Walker County Jail is 1101 1st Ave, Jasper, Alabama 35501. The jail has a 250-bed capacity.
