Alexis Giovanni Cardenas’ Death in Harris County Jail is Ruled a Homicide

After two days of incarceration, Alexis Giovanni Cardenas was released from Harris County Jail on July 8, 2025. No one knows why, but instead of leaving the jail, Mr. Cardenas forced his way back inside and had an altercation with corrections officers.

Video captured the incident in which Mr. Cardenas exhibited a lack of cooperation with officers, who would have escorted him out of the jail. At the tragic end of the incident, several deputies held Mr. Cardenas’ face down on the floor for about 8 minutes. The deputies then saw that he was unresponsive. He was pronounced deceased minutes later.

In September 2025 news, the medical examiner classified Mr. Cardenas’ death as a homicide. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined that the primary cause of Cardenas’ death was an irregular heartbeat associated with physical and electrical restraint and the acute toxic effect of cocaine, methamphetamine, chlordiazepoxide, and ethanol.

Mr. Cardenas had been arrested for a failure to appear in court for a 2014 traffic citation.

There has been no indication so far that anyone involved in the physical struggle with Mr. Cardenas will be criminally charged with his murder. However, a spokesperson for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said that six employees who were involved in the incident that resulted in Cardenas’ death are still assigned to duties that require no contact with jail inmates while the internal affairs investigation continues.

The address for Harris County Jail is 701 N San Jacinto St, Houston, Texas 77002. The jail has a 9,575-inmate capacity.
