Larynz Redd is the 7th Inmate to Die in Georgia’s DeKalb County Jail This Year

In Georgia news published September 23, 2025, a 27-year-old inmate at DeKalb County Jail died on Saturday and became the seventh person this year to die in the custody of the Decatur, Georgia, jail.
Twenty-seven-year-old Larynz Redd was booked into DeKalb County Jail in May 2024. He was discovered unresponsive on Saturday morning. Medical staff at the jail and DeKalb EMS provided lifesaving care, but he was pronounced deceased the morning of September 20, 2025.
The cause of Mr. Redd’s death is under ongoing investigation. Authorities say they have found no indication that foul play was involved.

Montay Stinson’s Family Claims their Loved One was Denied Medical Care in Fulton County Jail
Montay Stinson, 40, had been incarcerated since October 2022. Tragically, he was found deceased in Georgia’s Fulton County Jail at about 11:45 p.m. on July 31, 2023. His cause of death was deemed natural causes, with a mention of minor blunt force trauma to his head.
Mr. Stinson’s family claims that Mr. Stinson had complained of chest pains and severe stomach pains shortly before he died. They question whether the jail staff gave his medical issues proper treatment. The family believes that Mr. Stinson lost his life due to medical neglect.
After Mr. Stinson died inside Fulton County Jail, the jail came under scrutiny for inmate deaths and alleged inhumane conditions. At that time, in the previous five weeks, five inmates had died in the massive Atlanta, Georgia, jail.
A Death Caused by Asphyxia Due to Strangulation
Samuel Lawrence, 34, died in Fulton County Jail on August 26, 2023, and the autopsy released months later states that Mr. Lawrence was killed. He died from asphyxia due to strangulation, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s autopsy report. When Mr. Lawrence died, he became the 16th person to die in the custody of the Fulton County Sheriff’s office since mid-September 2022.
Mr. Lawrence’s family wants the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office held accountable. They had an obligation to protect him from violence. Supervision of inmates is important for many reasons, and preventing inmate-on-inmate violence is one of them.
A Horrific Death Preceded the Increase in Custodial Deaths at Fulton County Jail
A horrendous death occurred at Fulton County Jail on September 13, 2022. Lashawn Thompson, 35, was allegedly eaten alive by an infestation of bugs in his cell at Fulton County Jail. Mr. Thompson had mental issues and was in the jail’s psychiatric wing. His cell was disturbingly filthy. Black mold was on the walls, floors, and fixtures. The U.S. Justice Department launched an investigation into the jail as a result of Mr. Thompson’s gruesome death.
